About Exeter
Profile

Exeter Township is governed by an elected Board of Supervisors. These five officials set policy, adopt annual budgets, manage personnel, approve subdivisions and zoning changes, appoint members to various boards and commissions, and make decisions on general Township operations.

Historically, this area became part of the westward expansion of settlers.  Daniel Boone was born on the Boone Homestead in 1734. Mordecai  Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln’s great-great grandfather, had a homestead here .  Both of these sites still exist.  Indian artifacts have been discovered along the Schuylkill River that boarders the Township’s southern boundary. The Township was founded in 1741.

Through the 19th and 20th centuries, the Township began to grow due to the need for travel between Reading, Oley, Boyertown, Birdsboro, and King of Prussia. From the post WWII sprawl to the completion of Route 422 in the mid 1980s, each contributed in its own way to the thriving community that Exeter is today.

Located less than five miles from Reading, the county seat, the residents and business owners can easily access county services, arts and cultural events,  and take advantage of the offerings of four colleges/ universities with Reading addresses. A fifth option, a state university although not located in Reading, is located in Berks County.

The township is host to several public outdoor recreational facilities:  The Reading Country Club with an award winning 18-hole golf course, the Schuylkill River Trail, Thun Trail, and multiple township neighborhood parks, ball fields, and recreational programs. The adjacent Schuylkill River provides kayaking and canoeing opportunities.

The Administration Office of the Township is open from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. The office staff is there to help you and/or direct you to the proper person or department for assistance. Telephone: 610-779-5660.  Messages can be left after hours on voicemail.
